endorphins

My female owner relived one of her earliest memories of Brisbane08 yesterday, when she went for a (long) run with I-Fren and another friend. For the first time this year, she felt happy running. Euphoric actually. As if she could just go on and on, carefree and featherweight. Yah, I think she was drugged by the endorphins released and the effect was exacerbated by the company she had.

One for sentimentality (or being stuck in the past, as the non-sentimental individual would argue), she said it was like the “good old times”. Times which she should have treasured more when she was living in them.

rut

My female owner is slowly sinking into depression she reckons. She went running with some friends just now and while exercise is widely regarded to be the best (and quickest) remedy for lifting low mood (due to the release of dopamine and all that), my female owner found that she was even more blue afterwards. It didn’t help that the run reminded her of the good times she had with her jogging kakis.

Ah, she needs to get herself out of this rut, most definitely.

marathon

My female owner had this strong surge of inspiration yesterday to complete a marathon before she turns 30. This surge was triggered by her friend who said that he was considering doing the marathon this year at the Gold Coast. This means that she would have a training buddy, at least in theory!

My female owner had always believed that anyone can complete a marathon as the process is as much mental as it is physical. And she is a closet maschoist who likes to experience pain (think painful aikido locks and eccentric flute teacher). Since she is sort-of in an intellectual marathon, struggling through her thesis, she reckons that it would be complementary, to complete a physical (and mental) endurance challenge.

Nonethelss, she decided to hold her horses and lie low, coz there is real hard work and commitment associated with this decision and she wants to decide after thinking it through rationally. Today, she says that she found another person who wants to do the marathon. Alas, but also a guy. Anyway, she reckons she can pull together a few hard-core runners to train together if she is serious about this.

Should she? Does she have enough time? The marathon is in early July and she hasn’t ran for months. Plus her dodgy knee…

jog

My female owner acted on her conscience and went for a short jog (around 20mins) around her estate yesterday. I said acted on her conscience for a few reasons. Firstly, this was the same afternoon when she finished up all the pineapple tarts that Onli Fren gave her as a farewell gift. Secondly, she had not exercised for possibly about 2 months. Thirdly, the day before she left Singapore, Best Fern volunteered to drive her around as she rushed to complete her last minute errands, one of which involved buying a new pair of sports shoes (under much time pressure – he strategically placed lunch after shoe shopping so she had to hurry up and make a decision about her shoes or else she would starve). So she felt that she better start her exercise regime so that Best Fern’s efforts won’t go down the drain.

As a result of the jog, she found out, quite happily, that the closest shops were an easy 7mins walk away (think “quick access to food”). She also realised that there was no nice scenery around her area – just houses and roads… on slopes and gradients. This made her miss even more, the times she jogged around school with Jogging Kakis. My female owner reckons she never really lost weight through those jogs. Rather, those jogs (and fellowship) helped to alleviate her inner pressures and of course, give her false hopes that she is probably going to lose some unwanted weight. Finally, she figured that 20mins of jogging is really not too difficult after all and she might do more short runs in future.

whines

How many ways can you come up with, to get out of something? My female owner signed up for the 10km Bridge to Brisbane and for about 2 weeks before today, she had been apprehensive about running. The plan was to run with her running buddies, both of whom are seasoned (read: faster and better) runners. She started generating escape plans:

  • Standard modus operandi: Oversleep (most workable, but her friend had kindly agreed to provide transport)
  • Desperate, she wondered if she should pray for rain (which she didn’t. come on, she’s not a wet blanket)
  • Say she has menstrual cramps (but then, it had never been an issue)
  • Pass her running tag to someone else (then again, her friends looked at her as if she is mad when she said she was going for 10km, so probably no takers…)
  • Try to get sick
  • Back out by saying that she signed up for the run during her psychotic episode (err.. who would believe right?)
  • Just be assertive and maintain that she doesn’t want to run anymore (well… it’s not really true that she doesn’t want to run, she was just fearful of running such a long distance. She had self-limiting thoughts like she is too old already, that she will slow down her friends and cause them to wait eons for her)

As always, her whines are louder than her quiet resolve. She did attend the run (How could she back out last minute right? So old already, must be more reliable and less filmsy).

From the word go, her running buddies expectedly ran ahead of her. Hence, unlike all her past running events where her friends’ attitude was more similar to hers (“just run for fun”), my female owner ran by herself. Yet, she said it was the easiest run of all (hee, despite being the heaviest and fattest, and sleeping less than 4 hours. Plus, her dodgy knee was cooperative today). The prayer they made in the car before the run also helped to calm her down and shift her focus from her limitations to God’s provision and protection.

So anyway, she completed the run fairly smoothly and by God’s grace, her friends found her after a while. Post-running activities were meaningful too. They ended up at Sunnybank, having lunch and bubble tea (yay!). The fellowship was unlike with other social gatherings. This time, they spoke on a deeper level, a heart-to-heart connection that my female owner always valued and appreciated in her interactions with friends. Going beyond the surface, she calls it. It was such a relaxing day that she really felt as if she was on a holiday.

Reaching home at 2pm, my female owner spent the rest of Sunday comatose in bed. Old already lah. Need to recuperate.

run

There was a season in her life when my female owner was into joining running events.

With her Badminton kakis, she signed up for the Standard Chartered Marathon (10km) twice. They also took part in the Sheares Bridge Run and Army Half Marathon a couple of times. The distance was about 12km or something. And finally, the New Balance Real Run, where they had to run over different terrains, like trail, road and sand. About 10km all up, with the sand being the hardest part of the run. My female owner also had good fun with her friends during such events.

And then, they stopped. Some things are just seasonal.

A couple of years later (might have been 2007?) she found some jogging kakis in her former workplace and they sometimes went to the reservoir to exercise. And four of them, two guys and two gals, decided to sign up for another Sheares Bridge Run. My female owner had all good intentions to turn up for the run despite not training for it. Alas the night before, she stayed out till about 0200hr. Her other female friend was also gallivanting somewhere. Their pride prevented them from pulling out of the event (they were discussing whether they should, at 2am in the morning.. "but cannot lah, if we don't turn up, they will suan us for sure"), so they said that they would give each other a morning call to help wake the other.

My female owner ended up waking up when the other gal called her at 0700hr. She made it in time to meet them for breakfast AFTER the run. Whilst the other gal made it to the event site (she lived nearer to the event) she was too late to run. The guys, haha, took it in their stride and simply got a kick out of teasing them…. For a long time.

Going to Brisbane, my female owner never expected to participate in any more running events, simply because she was out of form and out of sync with Brisbane affairs. However, things have evolved in such a manner that she might be (see her commitment issues creeping in, she hesitates to confirm) participating in a 10km jogging event in a few weeks’ time. Let's see what happens.

tripped

My female owner had one of the most hectic day of her life today, which left her feeling exhausted, mentally, muscularly (coz she spent the whole day talking) and spiritually (just flat-out).

It started at 0900hr, where she had a tutor meeting with the lecturer, sorting out administrative matters. Then a RA meeting with her thesis supervisor at 1030hr. He spent 40mins telling her what he wants her to do… a long laundry list that left her wondering if she is competent enough to meet his demands (you know how some people are just not cut out to do dirty research). And he spent the next 40mins talking to her in a fatherly, mentorly manner about her career and Singapore. The switch from boss to mentor was so abrupt, my female owner had problems adjusting.

He ended at 1150hr, which gave her just 10mins to get to her 2-hr long tutorial class. And in her usual scatter-brained manner, she lost her way and ended up being late. And then, the next tutorial class at 1400hr. Barely enough time for her to go to the toilet. She was honestly so exhausted by her second tutorial class that she tripped over her words and had to will herself to look energetic.

Work finally ended and she went looking for Therapist Fren for lunch/ afternoon tea. With their arsenal of cookies and more cookies, they fed each other’s need for procrastination. Afternoon tea was hilarious, coz my female owner was absolutely tired from talking the whole day that she just couldn’t formulate her words and her thoughts. Therapist Fren was so entertained that she said that she would seek her out every Wed afternoon just to laugh at her.

And when you are mentally exhausted, the best way to end the day is probably to go for a jog… do something physical. Based on prior agreement, my female owner pulled herself out of her house soon after reaching home to jog with her friends. For an hour, she jogged largely by herself, thus allowing her time to rest her mouth muscles. Somehow, the jog was so liberating that she went longer than she normally would (but less than what her friends would like her to). After an uncertain day at work, it seemed as if it was the only thing she could control right now in her life.

push

My female owner went beyond what she thought she could do today, in terms of physical exercise.

Her original Thursday exercise routine was to walk to and fro work, covering 4.8km in an hour.

Today, she added in an evening jog with her jogging buddies. She expected “the usual round” but ended up going about twice the distance, at a faster pace than her previous jog.

Unexpectedly, she actually went longer and faster. About 50mins of jogging, covering about 8km (it’s hard to gauge) in all. She probably walked a total of 200m in all that distance.

Pushing herself was not easy. At times, her brain just zoned out, and she got into auto-pilot mode. She feared to stop, coz if she did, she might not be able to start again. At other times, she could hear her legs cursing her brain (“darn! Why did you decide to run? Look who’s doing all the hard work!”). She also refused to visualise the distance she had to cover, choosing to yah, zone out. Visualisation often discourages her.

What kept her going? A clear, non-negotiable goal (decided by her buddies who did not consult her), team spirit (everyone was like-minded, so how can she skive right?), verbal encouragement (she knew she “can do it” but somehow, hearing it from someone else is better than self-persuasion), role-modelling (she saw her friends happily jogging but yet was given space to go at her own pace, hence she was inspired but yet, felt little pressure) and periodical pacing (which pushed her pain barriers).

She’s not sure if she can do it (of course she can!) again but for now, its time to nurse her sore left calf and prepare her body for another 4.8km walk tomorrow.

knee

Wah, two days sped past me! Didn’t realise that I haven’t been updating my Turtle Pad. Ever since upsetting everyone with my accidental escape, I have been trying to lie low.. and not ruffle any more shells. Word has it that my brothers tried to tell my female owner’s father about my escape by hovering near the fencing to grab his attention. Unfortunately, he couldn’t read turtle language well enough to decipher what they were trying to tell him.

Maybe some updates about my female owner. She went walking/ jogging with her housemate today. Didn’t perspire much because they covered a short distance. So when she reached home, she decided to do some of the exercises Mr Physio “prescribed” her (there were 7!!). It was good that her housemate acted as the resistance for one of the exercises. And the housemate did feel the difference between her two legs, with one being more in control than the other.

Ordinarily, my female owner is NOT one to be consistent with exercising or routines. But because Mr Physio took the trouble to go to her house to work out her problem and work through the different exercises with her despite having examinations round the corner, my female owner felt that she cannot 对不起 him. So she decided that she has to do those exercises regularly.

Ah, see how long she can last this time!

physio

My female owner had a scare last night, because her friend had undergone knee operation. Apparently his knee had been affected through years of martial art, rugby and track. While my female owner cannot claim to have done years of aikido, badminton and jogging, she still identified with the possibility of having to go under the knife to correct her knee problem.

Today, she had an opportunity to ask another physio fren about her knee. Because they had time, Mr Physio (also one of her jogging kakis) was able to spend some time figuring out her knee problem. He diagnosed her problem as m……… Yes. My female owner wasn’t bright enough to remember the condition, or to even write it down. According to him, the lining between the knee joints might have torn because of the high impact activities she used to do.

He also assessed her left leg muscles (specifically the inner thighs) as being weaker than her right leg muscles, and demonstrated some exercises that would help to strengthen those muscles (my female owner was even instructed to write them down) and tone her body (haha!). Happily, he also assured her that operations are not common occurrences.

Ah, for once, my female owner is the client. She had a taste of being questioned about her symptoms (and found that she was not able to express herself clearly), being taught rehabilitation skills (now she understands that value of a therapist doing something alongside with the client), being clueless about what to expect (and so the therapist should be confident and reassuring), receiving a diagnosis (in a layperson point of view), gathering evidence (which convince her of the problem) and even discussing about homework compliance!

encouragement

My female owner finally went jogging tonight, after procrastinating for 11 days (she was supposed to start on 1 Oct) and not running for a few weeks.

It was a hard run for her, even though the distance was shorter than what she used to cover. And yes, in case you are wondering, she didn’t suddenly turn over a new leaf and go on her own accord. She was jioed by her usual jogging kakis.

Running with them had always been a good experience for my female owner. Although they were fitter than her and obviously able to run faster and cover greater distance than her, they would run along side her to encourage her to go faster and longer. No matter how much she whined about the cold weather or not being able to run anymore, they would still meet her at where she is (patiently and without condemn), to challenge her to stretch herself. The run never fails to end with a word of affirmation.

That’s the power of encouragement, it can help someone to go beyond what she thinks she can do, to achieve more than what she believes she can reach.

Go encourage someone today.

wakeful

It’s amazing how a 3km jog made a difference to my female owner’s sleeping habits. Ever since winter started, my female owner had trouble waking up in the morning and often snoozed till the last possible moment (or sometimes past the moment… and end up being late). This morning (despite it being Monday), she woke up with a clear mind and got out of bed easily. Her need to snooze was just not there (and mind you, it’s not because she had something gleeful to look forward to in the day).

She was shocked at the difference and given that she did not do any different except to jog, she figured that the difference was due to the 3km jog she had last night with a couple of her church friends. Yes, after a halt of a few months, some of them actually went jogging again last night (in cold chilly winter). My female owner was probably at her whiniest ever, about the cold, the wind and having to jog (the thing is, no one forced her to jog!). My personal take is that she’s just so conflicted. Her logic was in disagreement with her body and emotions. And her emotions (relief at being able to exercising + reluctance to exercise) were facing some internal discord.

Anyway, so they took the same route as they did when they first started in Feb. The jog was nostalgic in a sense, coz that was an activity which she started doing when she first arrived in Brisbane. It was like going down memory lane, reliving the thoughts, sensations and feelings she once experienced as an alien to the country. The familiar mental mantra she repeats to herself to keep going despite wanting to stop.. And going through the same route again after so many months, she feels a little less alien-ish but still apprehensive about things to come.

The “wakeful” effects of the jog lasted the morning and she did not feel sleepy during class. The only thing is that her left knee has acted up again.. so climbing stairs and sometimes walking brings about soreness in that area…

The perils of aging… and gaining weight. Wahaha. That’s why I rather not walk around and prefer to stay under the Trolley. Best way to prevent joint pain.

gym

Did anyone ever tell you how gullible my female owner is?

There was once her Onli Fren and her went to a local gym, meaning to redeem a free one week’s trial of gym access. Before going in, they reminded each other that they were not going to sign up for any gym packages.

At the entrance, they were served by a fat, oversized employee who tried to introduce various gym packages. The two of them had always found it difficult to say no to people, even to sales personnel. Hence, they were coaxed and cajoled by the Fat Man who used this powerful line “surely you don’t want to end up like me?”

And the two silly gals actually ended up signing up for a year’s membership, without even seeing the gym’s facilities, equipment or shower rooms! They fell victim to a Fat Man’s persuasive powers at the door-step of a gym! This was despite the fact that my female owner was aware of the various psychological techniques that he was pulling on them (e.g. door-in-the-face) and that all logic points to a NO (e.g. my female owner could get a staff gym package if she waited a while longer). My female owner tried to justify her irrational action by saying that having to pay for gym would motivate (or force) her to exercise regularly. And hopefully, after one year, she would have formed the habit of exercising and hence, would not need to join a gym.

Ya, right. The rest, they say, is history.

skipping

My female owner had a chat with one of her clinic secretaries, G today. The conversation started because my female owner was wearing her yellow sleeveless dress without any jumper and it was a cold, slightly rainy day.

G: did anyone tell you that it’s a cold day today?
FO: no, but I’ve got functional fats. they insulate me.

Stunned silence.

G: functional fats?
FO: yes, I put on 6kg in 6 months!

Astonished look.

G: but you look slim. I can’t imagine how you look, 6kg lighter! You look alright and don’t you go lose any of the 6kg.
FO: you are too kind.
G: no no. Let me look at you again (and my female owner had to go around the counter to stand in front of her for a full-body scan). Yes, you are alright, I can’t see where the 6kgs went. Now, go and celebrate this weekend.
__________________________

Seems as if people in different continents have different standards. Anyway, my female owner brought a skipping rope over from Singapore, in her feeble attempt to lose weight. The skipping rope hasn’t worked well for her, coz the rope is too light, and tends to get tangled with her feet. Also, she finds that she has to make big circles with her arms in order to circumvent the “weightless” rope. These limitations exhaust her quickly. The other plausible explanation is simply that she does not know how to skip properly!

Anyway, in her quest to maximise her new exercise regime (she has had many in the past), my female owner stumbled upon a skipping website which she wished that she saw before buying her rope.
